In 1991, NEC released the TurboDuo, a console that combined a cartridge system with a CD-ROM reader for its games—something unusual for a fourth-generation console.
Here we’ll take a look at all the Dragon Ball games released for this platform, as well as all Turbo Duo models and some of its accessories.
The complete list of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z games is actually very short, as only one title was released for this fourth-generation console: “Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Son Goku Densetsu”, a rather unusual fighting game because of its combat system, in which the player doesn’t directly control the character.
To enjoy Dragon Ball games on the TurboDuo, it helps to understand the console first. Originally released in Japan as the PC Engine Duo in 1991, it combined the PC Engine and its CD-ROM² unit in a single system, allowing the use of both cartridges and discs, with improved audio and storage thanks to the CD. Later came the Duo‑R in 1993, a more affordable and reliable version, and the Duo‑RX in 1994, with full support for Super CD-ROM² and enhanced audio.
When it arrived in North America in 1992, it was renamed TurboDuo, keeping the same technology but adapted for the Western market, with AV output and compatibility with the TurboGrafx-16 catalog. That said, here they are.
You may already have at home a console from when you were younger, or you may have inherited it from a friend or family member, or perhaps you bought it second-hand, but… you’re still missing some accessory or peripheral to be able to play with it, like an adapter or a controller…
So here’s a list of the things you might need to play your retro console.
With this accessory, you can convert the AV output of your console to HDMI for modern TVs.
With this accessory, you can convert the RF (antenna cable) output of your console to HDMI for modern TVs.

Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission is a digital adaptation of the Japanese arcade machines played with real cards, known by the same name: DB Heroes. It was released in 2019 for Nintendo Switch (and also has a PC version).
The game is a card-based combat game where we play as Beat, who becomes involved in various battles to save the world alongside our heroes.
It features 7 vs. 7 card battles, with iconic Dragon Ball characters and unique transformations exclusive to this game. It includes over 350 characters and more than 1000 cards to collect.
Dragon Ball GT: Transformation is the only game based on DBGT for this console. It’s an action and fighting game with a multiplayer mode via the Link Cable. Its story mode focuses on the Baby saga.
Dragon Ball Z: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans – Space Chapter is the second part of the Playdia game, continuing the story from the Earth Chapter. It was released in Japan on December 16, 1994 and, like the first part, is more of an interactive video than an action game: players make decisions that alter how the animated OVA scenes unfold, this time extending the story into space.
It is rare, collectible, and has very limited gameplay, designed more as a fan experience than a traditional game.
The Xbox Series X (1 TB Digital Edition, Robot White) is one of the most recent versions of the Series X family, introduced in 2024 as a fully digital alternative to the standard model. It retains the same power and architecture as the standard Series X—12 TFLOPS, 4K native support, and ultra-fast load times—but removes the disc drive, focusing entirely on digital content with a refreshed Robot White design that is modern and elegant.
Compared to the Series S, this edition offers higher graphical power, more memory, and 4K performance, while maintaining digital-only gameplay. The main difference from the classic Series X is the lack of a Blu-Ray drive, making it ideal for players who purchase or download all their games online.
For Dragon Ball gamers, this console is a perfect way to enjoy titles like Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO or FighterZ with maximum visual quality, without worrying about physical discs and with immediate access to all digital content in the saga.
Jump Force – Premium Edition is the latest and most complete edition released for PC. This edition includes everything found in the Ultimate Edition, giving us the base fighting game, content from the first Season Pass, access to 9 extra playable characters, cosmetics, and other items to use in-game.
The extra included characters are: Asta, Boa Hancock, Broly, Gogeta, Jiren, Naruto Uzumaki (Sage Mode), Sabo, Shoto Todoroki, and Super Saiyan God Goku.
What’s exclusive to this edition is a decorative steel case, the physical version of the game, 3 art prints, and postcards.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is the second Dragon Ball game released for the Nintendo Switch, and it brings back the genre of classic fighting from the arcade era in 2.5D, with graphics and illustrations worthy of the time. It’s a highly competitive fighting game featuring almost all characters from DB Super and DBZ, among others.
Its story mode introduces Android 21, wife of Dr. Gero, who has created clones of the Z Fighters. Players must progress through the story mode until they defeat her. However, the game’s main strength is its PVP, which allows for impressive fights and combos.
This game was also released for other consoles such as PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but for the Switch it was adapted by slightly reducing its graphics so the console wouldn’t “explode.”
Over time, it has received several Season Packs and DLC that expand the character roster and add more content. However, these DLC are only downloadable and purchasable from the Nintendo Shop.
Dragon Ball Z 2 V is a special collector’s edition of the video game Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2, released a few months prior to the main launch.
This edition was only released in Japan, in exclusive collaboration with the V-Jump magazine, with only 2000 copies of this version of Budokai 2 produced.
Aside from its name and packaging, the game includes one key difference from the original: the ability to play as Cooler.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Special Edition is one of the most complete bundles of this 2016 game. It includes the base game, the Super Pass (which contains Super Packs 1, 2, 3, 4 and early access to Future Trunks from DB Super), and also the Hero of Justice Pack Set (which includes Justice Packs 1 and 2).
It includes almost all the DLC content released during the 9 years since the game's launch, up to the release of this edition.
Dragon Ball Z: The Legend is the second Dragon Ball game released for the console in 1996. This game was released for both PS1 and Sega Saturn.
It is a fighting game for 1 or 2 players (PvP), with 3D stages and characters made with 2D sprites, where you can choose several fighters in each battle and switch them at will.
The game features a total of 35 playable characters, including characters from all DBZ sagas. Some of them are: Cell, Cell Jr, Kid Boo, Frieza, Nappa, Piccolo, Kid Gohan, etc.
The game has the honor of being the first DB game in which its story mode narrates all events of Dragon Ball Z, from the arrival of Raditz to the death of Kid Boo.
The game has unique mechanics and particular gameplay; it is a game both loved and hated. Additionally, as a fun fact, this game never reached America.
Dragon Ball: Shenron no Nazo is the first Dragon Ball game/cartridge released for the NES in 1986, just one year after the publication of the franchise’s first manga.
It is an adventure game where we move through different stages defeating various NPCs and villains, telling the original Dragon Ball story from the encounter between Goku and Bulma to the first martial arts tournament, where the story slightly differs from the canon.
A cult game for a cult console.
