The Sega Genesis (known as the Sega Mega Drive in Europe and Japan) was a fourth-generation console released by SEGA in 1988 in Japan, representing a major leap over its predecessor, the Master System.
Dragon Ball appeared on this console with only one title, which was never released outside Japan.
The complete list of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z games released for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) is very short, as it only received one title, which was exclusive to the Japanese region.
That said, Dragon Ball Z: Buyū Retsuden was a game that only saw release on this console, so if you wanted to play this fighting game, it had to be on a Genesis/Mega Drive.
Remember that both the cartridges and the console have regional lockouts: NTSC-J (Japan and Asia), NTSC-U/C (North America), PAL (Europe and Australia), so you need to make sure the game and console are from the same region.

To play Dragon Ball on the Sega Genesis, you first need one of its versions. The console had several revisions throughout its life: the first Japanese Mega Drive released in 1988, the original North American Genesis in 1989, and the European Mega Drive in 1990, each adapted to its region with differences in video frequency, cartridge shape, and AV output.
Later, compact revisions arrived, such as the Mega Drive II in Japan and Europe and the Genesis Model 2 and 3 in North America, which reduced size, cost, and modified some ports and peripheral compatibility. Each version maintained the 16-bit power and the essence of the console, though some limited the use of accessories or compatibility with games from other regions.
That said, here they are:
You may already have at home a console from when you were younger, or you may have inherited it from a friend or family member, or perhaps you bought it second-hand, but… you’re still missing some accessory or peripheral to be able to play with it, like an adapter or a controller…
So here’s a list of the things you might need to play your retro console.
With this accessory, you can convert the AV output of your console to HDMI for modern TVs.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers – Special Edition was released on the same day as the standard edition, in 2022.
This edition stands out for including exclusive cosmetic items, which are only available through this version or the higher-tier ‘Limited Edition’.
The cosmetic pack includes:
A full outfit for the player’s avatar.
An exclusive victory pose.
A special vehicle skin.
All of this content is purely cosmetic and does not impact gameplay.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers is a survival multiplayer game, whose genre is called "Asymmetrical Survival Multiplayer (1 Raider vs. 7 Survivors)", in this case it will always be 1 vs 7.
The Raider or Hunter aims to eliminate all Survivors or Prey, while the latter must hide around the map, use items and vehicles to survive the hunter or raider.
In this case, being a Dragon Ball game, the hunters are represented by Dragon Ball villains like Cell, Frieza, or Majin Buu, who evolve and change form (e.g., Cell 1st form becomes Cell 2nd form and then reaches his final or perfect form) as the match progresses.
The survivors or prey must play as a team to survive. They can choose from some DB characters and original ones from the game. Their goal is to activate "the time machine" and escape, as many as can make it.
The game, besides Xbox One, is also available on: PS4, PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi, or DBZ: Sparking!, is the 5º Dragon Ball game released for the PS2 in 2005. This game was released exclusively for PlayStation.
In Europe and America, the game was known as Budokai Tenkaichi, but in Japan it was called Sparking!. The name change for the western market was a marketing strategy to make players associate it with the Budokai saga, even though they are unrelated. That is why in Japan the names are completely different. This naming strategy was dropped starting with the fourth entry: Sparking! Zero.
It is a 3D fighting game with 2-player multiplayer. The stages are semi-destructible, as are the characters’ clothes.
It features more than 50 playable characters, with unique transformations and forms usable in combat.
Its Story Mode covers all of DBZ, the 90’s movies, DBGT, and in almost every storyline you can activate a What if... to explore alternate endings and stories beyond the canon.
Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero – Premium Collector's Edition is the most complete edition of the game, available on the official release day in 2025, sold exclusively through the Bandai Namco Store.
This edition is identical to the Collector's but with a small extra for purchasing it from the official store. Additionally, it had a very limited number of units, making it the only one (along with the Collector’s) that included the physical game. This edition contains the base game, everything from the Deluxe Edition, meaning access to the first season pass with 4 DLCs, and 3-day early access to each DLC’s content.
It also includes everything from the Ultimate Edition, that is, the Ultimate Upgrade Pack: Goku (Super) outfit with Power Pole, emotes, backgrounds, a customization item, and the Super Shenron summon, all of them cosmetic items.
As part of the collector’s edition, it includes: the physical game, a diorama sculpture of Goku and Broly from DB: Super, and a decorative metal case.
As exclusive content for this Premium Collector’s Edition, which could only be purchased from the Bandai Namco Store, it adds an additional steelbook and 4 cards from the Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion Worlds.
The 4 DLCs from the first pass add over 20 characters based on DB: Super and DB: Daima, as well as cosmetics, and additional story and battle content.
The physical game (cartridge or card) contains the basic installation to play only on the Switch 1, but when inserted into our Switch 2, exclusive graphical updates for that console will be installed.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot – Daima Edition was released five years after the original editions and is intended as a special edition focused on Dragon Ball Daima, since it ignores the first two Season Passes.
This edition includes the base game and the Daima Pack, titled Daima: Adventure Through the Demon Realm, which features two episodes that cover the entire story of the Dragon Ball Daima anime, starring “mini” Goku and introducing new transformations like Goku's Super Saiyan 4 and Vegeta's Super Saiyan 3.
It also includes permanent upgrades for cooking items.
The PS Vita Slim (PCH-2000) is the second version released of this console, characterized by being thinner than the previous version, with some redesigned buttons, but the most important novelty was the inclusion of OLED technology in the screen.
