Dragon Ball has had a solid presence on this console, with a total of six games, from Xenoverse 1 to Gekishin Squadra, released in 2025.

The different versions and models of the PS4 console

To enjoy Dragon Ball games on PlayStation, the first thing we need is a PS4, the console that has accompanied the saga throughout an entire generation. Over the years, Sony has released three main models: the original PS4, the PS4 Slim, and the PS4 Pro.

The original PS4 was the pioneer — the one that marked Dragon Ball’s return to a new console era with titles like Xenoverse, offering a huge technical leap compared to previous generations. The PS4 Slim, more compact and efficient, maintained the same power but came with a more modern and quieter design, ideal for those seeking comfort and stability. Finally, the PS4 Pro took the experience to another level, with improved graphics, 4K support, and HDR colors that make every Kamehameha shine.

If I had to pick one to play Dragon Ball, I’d go with the PS4 Pro — it’s the version that best pushes the visual side and makes every fight feel as intense as a battle between Goku and Vegeta.

PS4 accessories and peripherals to play Dragon Ball

So here’s a list of the things you might need to play your almost retro console.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero - Premium Collector's Edition

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero – Premium Collector's Edition is the most complete version of the game (above the Collector's Edition), released on the game’s official launch day in 2024, and sold exclusively through the Bandai Namco Store.

This edition is identical to the Collector’s, but with a small bonus for purchasing from the official store. It was also produced in a very limited quantity, making it one of the only editions (alongside the Collector’s) to include a physical copy of the game. It includes the base game, everything from the Deluxe edition (i.e., access to the first season pass with 3 DLCs, plus 3-day early access to each one).

It also contains the full content of the Ultimate edition, i.e., the Ultimate Upgrade Pack: Goku (Super) outfit with Power Pole, emotes, backgrounds, a customization item, and the Super Shenron Summon—all of which are cosmetic items.

From the Collector’s Edition, it includes the physical game, a Goku and Broly (DB: Super) diorama statue, and a decorative steelbook case.

As exclusive content of the Premium Collector’s Edition, available only through the Bandai Namco Store, it also includes an additional steelbook and 4 cards from the Dragon Ball Super Card Game: Fusion Worlds.

The 3 DLCs in the first pass feature over 20 characters from DB: Super and DB: Daima, along with cosmetics, and some story and battle content.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot arrives as the first major 3D RPG with open-world elements and combat worthy of any fighting game. The base game tells the full story of Dragon Ball Z, from Raditz’s arrival to Majin Buu’s defeat, featuring stunning cutscenes and additional story content supervised by Akira Toriyama.

This is a single-player game designed in the style of Final Fantasy, with item gathering, crafting, ability upgrades, and a semi-open world to explore the Dragon World, complete side quests, and enjoy mini-games like fishing, baseball, and races.

Combat is similar to that of Xenoverse, but with the cinematic and fast-paced style typical of CyberConnect2 (known for their Naruto games). Its art style was unmatched at the time of release.

The game launched in 2020 in four editions: Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate, and Collector’s Edition.

It has received multiple Season Passes, adding content from the classic 90s movies, early Dragon Ball Super films, and even Dragon Ball Daima, among other additions.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Dragon Ball FighterZ is the second Dragon Ball game released for the Nintendo Switch, and it brings back the genre of classic fighting from the arcade era in 2.5D, with graphics and illustrations worthy of the time. It’s a highly competitive fighting game featuring almost all characters from DB Super and DBZ, among others.

Its story mode introduces Android 21, wife of Dr. Gero, who has created clones of the Z Fighters. Players must progress through the story mode until they defeat her. However, the game’s main strength is its PVP, which allows for impressive fights and combos.

This game was also released for other consoles such as PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but for the Switch it was adapted by slightly reducing its graphics so the console wouldn’t “explode.”

Over time, it has received several Season Packs and DLC that expand the character roster and add more content. However, these DLC are only downloadable and purchasable from the Nintendo Shop.

Dragon Ball 3: Gokuden

Dragon Ball 3: Gokuden is the third game/cartridge of Dragon Ball released for the NES in 1989, while the DB anime and manga were still airing. This game also never officially left Japan.

It is considered the predecessor of Dragon Ball: Daimaō Fukkatsu, with barely a one-year gap between releases. It is essentially a turn-based RPG-style game, but played with collectible cards, which we gather while moving across the map, fighting battles, and progressing through the story.

Its story spans from when Goku begins his training with Master Roshi at Kame House to the tournament against Piccolo Jr., covering all arcs from the classic/childhood era of Dragon Ball.

A game of its time, which started to shape the card battle genre.

Nintendo Wii | RVL-001

The Nintendo Wii, or RVL-001, was Nintendo’s seventh-generation console, released to replace the GameCube. This console was a major gamble by Nintendo because it chose not to compete with Xbox and PlayStation in graphics power, instead focusing on gameplay and attracting casual players, not just gamers, introducing its new motion-sensing controllers to interact with games.

This console is also fully compatible with GameCube games, controllers, and memory cards.

It is Nintendo’s second home console to abandon traditional cartridges in favor of discs, but they are special discs developed by and for Nintendo, called Wii Discs, and it also reads GameCube mini-DVDs. However, the console does not play CDs, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs.

The console is region-locked, and games and memory cards are not compatible between consoles and games from different regions. There are disc-based methods to bypass this lock, or console modifications, which allow you to play your games for collecting purposes. This information is for informative purposes only, not for piracy.
