Sega Mega Drive 2 | JP

The Japanese Sega Mega Drive 2 was released in April 1993 as a revision of the original console. It remained part of the fourth generation and retained the same 16-bit hardware, but featured a more compact design, a lighter casing, and a simplified appearance.

It removed the headphone volume control and updated the AV outputs to be more standard and cost-effective. It operated under the NTSC-J (60 Hz) format and, as in other regions, had compatibility limitations with foreign cartridges.

This version was very popular in Japan, especially among SEGA fans and arcade game enthusiasts, and marked the end of the classic Mega Drive era before the arrival of the Sega Saturn.

Sega Mega Drive | EU

The first European Sega Mega Drive was released on November 30, 1990, as part of the fourth generation of consoles. It was almost identical to the Japanese and American versions but adapted to the PAL (50 Hz) standard, which caused some games to run slightly slower and display black borders on the screen.

It kept its iconic black design with red accents and offered impressive graphics and sound quality for its time. As with other regions, it had compatibility limitations with Japanese and U.S. cartridges due to physical and regional differences.

Later, revised versions such as the Mega Drive II, which was more compact and featured a new aesthetic design, continued the console’s legacy in Europe.
